The days of speculating about, and pouring over Persona 4 remake leaks are over, because the game has been officially announced. Earlier today, we got our first (and very brief) look at an updated version of one of the most beloved Persona games.
The remake is officially titled Persona 4 Revival, and it was announced during the Xbox Games Showcase.
The Persona 4 Revival reveal was so brief, however, you very well could have missed it. It was a simple trailer that clocked in at just under one-minute. It did, of course, show off the updated visuals, mainly with a character running around the town of Inaba.
Revival is pitched as a “reimagining” of the classic game, but even the press release didn’t tell us what, exactly, we can expect. Revival does not have a release target, either, but it is in the works for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It will be available day one with Game Pass (Ultimate/PC).
Recently, voice actor Yuri Lowenthal claimed on social media that he won’t be coming back to play Yosuke, which is apparently a decision made by Atlus. Several other actors, who voiced characters in the original game themselves, later also chimed in to say that they, too, will not be returning for the remake.
However, fans quickly began to suspect that it’s all part of a large marketing ploy, because the actors released these statements in the same order their characters are introduced in the game, which would’ve either been a massive coincidence, or an elaborate marketing blitz.
Persona 4 initially came out in 2008 on the PS2. In 2012, an updated version – Persona 4 Golden – came to the PS Vita, before the original game was ported to the PS3 in 2014. Persona 4 Golden also made it onto PC in 2020, and finally PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch in 2023.
Those were all re-releases, however, with minimal changes, whereas a full-on remake would involve a lot more than that, which is why fans have been anticipating this reveal.
Director Kazuhisa Wada said in a press release following the announcement that the team is “confident that this will be a fresh and surprising product for both newcomers and long-time fans,” but didn’t share any more besides.
