The spin-off of the iconic Sex and the City polarised fans of the original. Critics of the series point to Samantha’s non-return, changes in the personalities of beloved characters, and not-so-interesting plot lines among its flaws. Still, the show has not lacked an audience – And Just Like That… was greenlit for a third season even before the season 2 finale.
As the show’s creator Michael Patrick King said:
We are thrilled to spend more time in the Sex and the City universe telling new stories about the lives of these relatable and aspirational characters played by these amazing actors. And Just Like That… Here comes season three.
The show’s second season brought controversy, several surprising storylines, a cameo by Kim Cattrall as Samantha, and the highly anticipated return of John Corbett as Aidan. What will surprise viewers in season 3? Here’s everything you need to know.

And Just Like That… Season 3 plot
The first season began with a tragedy in Carrie’s life – the death of Mr. Big. Despite being devastated by her husband’s passing, the writer decided to rebuild her life.
In season two, she crossed paths with Aidan, her former great love. However, their romance wasn’t destined to last as, when Aidan received news that his youngest son had been in a car accident, he chose to leave Carrie and return to take care of him.
However, Aidan isn’t gone forever. As confirmed by the showrunner, Michael Patrick King, the love story will spark again in season 3 (via Entertainment Weekly):
The Carrie-Aidan relationship is dramatic and exciting because it contains two points of view. I think half the fans who do not want Carrie to be in a relationship will be like, ‘Enough!’ The other half will understand that when you love somebody, what comes with them is their family.
It’s an interesting thing when you have Carrie Bradshaw in love figuring out how to make this work when, at a certain age, everyone has a past. There are a couple of booby traps in the Carrie-Aidan history that we’re very aware of, as well.
Another vital storyline in season 3 will be Carrie writing a novel. Thanks to this, Carrie’s voiceover narration, which was a distinctive feature of Sex and the City, will return to the show.
According to the showrunner:
Carrie’s actually writing a new book and the voiceover is the way into the book. When we did voiceover on Sex in the City, Carrie had this overview of everything. She was telling you what to think and what to feel. For the first two seasons of And Just Like That, I took the voiceover away because I didn’t think she knew what she was feeling.
She’s starting to feel things again and have an overview of where she is in the world. Writing a book is very private, and so, in an interesting way, it’s almost a direct, intimate conversation with the viewer. Maybe there are things she’s saying to the viewer that she wouldn’t say to even her best friends.

Carrie’s friends also faced their own challenges. Miranda, attempting to rearrange her life, ultimately parted ways with both Steve and Che, but they remained friends in both cases. Meanwhile, Charlotte decided to return to a full-time job, much to Harry’s surprise. Seema took a risk and started dating Ravi, and Nya found love again.
King revealed that:
It’s a lot of ‘new’ within the familiar, but even the familiar characters are going through new things. It’s more than Carrie that has a new apartment. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) has a new apartment. We feel that there’s a lot of newness in the world right now, especially for these characters. We wanted to tell new stories and put them through new obstacles.

However, Sara Ramirez, who starred as Che Diaz, won’t appear in season 3. The character played by Ramirez, a nonbinary stand-up comedian and Miranda’s new love interest, wasn’t exactly a fan favourite. Che was criticised as one-dimensional and unauthentic, and their relationship with the lawyer was considered unsatisfying. Some also regarded the character as an example of tokenism.
According to Variety, Che disappears from And Just Like That… because the relationship between the comedian and Miranda burned out, and their paths diverged. Perhaps viewers’ dislike of the character was also significant. Another theory is that Sarah Ramirez’s departure from the cast concerns her statements on social media about the Israeli-Palestinian war.
Karen Pittman, who starred as Columbia law school professor Nya Wallace, won’t appear in season 3 as well.
