Ingredients & Substitutions
These air fryer donuts use simple, wholesome ingredients that make them both delicious and nutritious.
Here are the ingredients:
- Flours: Use all-purpose flour for a classic texture or whole wheat pastry flour for added fiber and a delicate texture.
- Greek Yogurt Benefits: Greek yogurt adds creaminess, a boost of protein, and is a gut-friendly probiotic rich food.
- Honey: A natural sweetener, honey replaces refined sugar for a more balanced sweetness.
- Healthy Oils: There’s no oil in the dough, but a light coating before baking keeps the donuts moist while they’re air frying. For healthy fats, we recommend using avocado oil or coconut oil. But any neutral oil suitable for high-heat cooking will work.
- Low Sugar Icing Alternative: The icing in this recipe is optional. You can use powdered sugar, or for a low sugar option, use a sugar substitute like allulose instead.
How to Make These Air Fryer Donuts
Here are the simple steps to make these yummy air fryer donuts:
- Preheat & Prep: Set your air fryer to 340°F and prepare your ingredients. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Stir together Greek yogurt, honey, and milk until smooth.
- Bring the Dough Together: Mix wet and dry ingredients, knead lightly, and roll out to ½-inch thickness.
NOTE: The doughnut dough should be sticky but not too wet. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour. If it’s too dry, add a bit more milk.
- Cut & Shape: To make that classic donut shape, first use a biscuit cutter and a miniature 1-inch cookie cutter for the donut holes. If you don’t have either, use the rim of a drinking glass to cut out the donuts. Then use the rounded end of a wooden spoon handle to make the donut hole. Push it through the center and use a circular motion to widen.
- Air Fry: You’ll need to spray or baste the donuts with avocado oil or coconut oil before air frying. This keeps the dough light and moist while cooking. But it still cuts down on the amount of oil (and calories) needed than if they were deep fried, like a traditional doughnut. Air fry for 5 minutes, or until a light golden brown. Let cool a bit before icing.
- Make the Icing: Stir the Greek yogurt with powdered sugar for a creamy, tangy glaze. Add a splash of vanilla extract for an extra boost of vanilla flavor.
- Dip & Decorate: Coat donuts in icing, add sprinkles
- Enjoy!
Best Tips for Making Fluffy Air Fryer Donuts
Don’t Over-mix: Overworking the dough makes air fryer vanilla donuts dense instead of fluffy.
Customize Sweetness: You can adjust the sweetener amount in the icing to taste.
Add More Flavor: For a flavor variation, try adding chocolate chips to the dough. Or some lemon zest would another be a tasty addition.
Instead of icing the doughnuts, you could also mix granulated sugar or your favorite sugar substitute 50/50 with cinnamon. Then coat the donuts in the cinnamon sugar mixture warm out of the oven.
Storage Tip: These are best enjoyed fresh, but you can keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. When you’re ready to eat them again, just pop it into the microwave for 15-20 seconds to warm.
