NFL analyst Nick Wright believes Dillon Gabriel could be trouble for Coach Prime’s son, Shedeur Sanders, in 2025 and going forward.
The Browns selected Gabriel in the third round before taking Sanders in the fifth round. Both rookies are in the competition to start at quarterback for Cleveland this season.
However, Wright believes Sanders will have his hands full to even make the roster. Instead of competing for the starting job, Wright believes Sanders needs to beat Gabriel for a roster spot.

“The Browns valued Gabriel more,” Wright said on First Things First (1:21). “The Browns took him in the third round. They took Shedeur in the fifth round, with that said, and acknowledged, it is a big problem for Shedeur, if the answer to this question isn’t him. Neither one of these guys is going to break camp the starter.
“It’s going to be one of the veterans, if Shedeur wants a chance, if there is going to be a chance for Shedeur, to prove his believers right, either prove his father right, prove himself right, his singular battle is move ahead of Gabriel on the depth chart.”
The Browns have Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett on the roster as well, and Cleveland will likely only take three quarterbacks on the roster.
So, if Sanders wants to stay on the 53-man roster, Wright believes the competition to watch is Sanders vs Gabriel.
Browns coach comments on Shedeur Sanders-Dillon Gabriel competition
Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel are not only competing to be the starter, but are also competing for a roster spot.
Heading into the 2025 NFL season, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski says Sanders and Gabriel have done great in OTAs and are looking forward to the competition in training camp.
“Those guys are doing great,” Stefanski said of his rookie signal callers, via CBS Sports. “They are both wired to get in early, stay late, put in whatever work is required. They’re sponges in the meeting room, which I think is really fun for me.
“In my vantage point, I get to sit there and watch the two young guys look over and there’s Joe (Flacco), 40 years old, won a Super Bowl. There’s Kenny Pickett, just going into Year 4, but first-round draft pick that’s been on a couple teams, won a Super Bowl last year.”
Cleveland’s veteran minicamp is set for June 10-12 with training camp taking place later on.
The Browns open their 2025 NFL season on Sept. 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals at home.
